Under certain circumstances, people who have claimed asylum in the UK (asylum seekers) may be provided with accommodation by the Home Office. Applicants have little or no influence over the type or location of the accommodation offered, however their health needs should be taken into account in the allocation process.
Broadly, there are two kinds of accommodation offered to asylum seekers. These are:
- Initial accommodation - short term, temporary accommodation for people who are making an application for asylum and who would otherwise be destitute.
- Dispersal - longer term accommodation, provided while the applicant awaits their asylum decision as part of ‘Section 95’ asylum support.
