There are over 73 languages spoken in the north west of England (Manchester City Council 2007). These languages demonstrate that the region has a rich and diverse population drawn from all over the globe.
Frontline health workers now work with a wide range of peoples and cultures and delivering high quality health care for all can present a challenge.
Cultural competence allows the health worker to develop a framework of practice that can meet these challenges, increasing the confidence and ability of individual staff, teams and services to work with local, but globalised communities.
There are several approaches to developing cultural practices, including the Papadopoulos, Tilki and Taylor Model of Cultural Competence (1998).
