Nearly 30 years on, this statement by a Canadian nurse trainer remains an acute observation of people who have experienced events so outside the norm of UK life that it can be daunting for health professionals to know where to start to work with them.
The majority of migrants are young and healthy, and their health demographics are essentially different from those of the ageing population of the UK.
However, this healthy status on arrival may be compromised by the stressors of migration and the health of migrants often deteriorates after some time in the host country due to a range of factors, not all of which can be addressed by health services.
